Fire Safety
Summary of Actions
Upon discovering a fire:
- Leave fire area immediately and close doors
- Sound alarm
- Call 911
- Use nearest exit
- Avoid elevators
Upon hearing the alarm:
- Leave building via nearest exit
- Close door behind you
Muster Point: Gather on the sidewalk to the south of the building main entrance.
Prevention
The most common cause of fire is unattended cooking and the most common area of origin is the kitchen.
Critical guidelines:
- Never extinguish oil fires with water
- Maintain lint traps and ventilation
- Store greasy rags in proper safety containers
- Use ashtrays when smoking
- Keep fire extinguishers in kitchen (not beside stove)
- Don’t disable smoke alarms
- Keep a multipurpose fire extinguisher in your unit
- Maintain duct tape for emergency use
To Go or To Stay?
Warning
Your fire safety is your responsibility! Every fire is potentially dangerous and unpredictable, so do not underestimate the risk to your life.
Usually, the best thing to do is leave the building as soon as possible.
When to stay in your suite:
- Smoke encountered in corridor
- Smoke in exit stairs
- Fire department instructs you to remain
- Physical inability to use stairs
If you must stay — smoke protection actions:
- Use duct tape (masking tape may also be effective) to seal cracks around the door
- Place wet towels at base of door
- Seal vents and air ducts
- Keep low to the floor where the air is cleaner
- Move to balcony if available with phone and warm clothing
- Open windows for fresh air if needed
Warning
Most people die because they attempt to leave the building through smoke-filled corridors and stairs in the advanced stages of a fire.
In-Suite Silence Switch
The in-suite silence switch is for voluntary use. Depress for 3–5 seconds; it silences for approximately 10 minutes. It does not silence smoke alarms.
Fire Extinguishment
Only after ensuring that the alarm has been raised and the Fire Department notified should experienced persons attempt to extinguish small fires.
Earthquake
What You Need to Know
- You are self-reliant during earthquakes
- No food, water, or blankets are stored on property
- Gas may not shut off automatically

During an Earthquake
- The major danger is getting hit by falling objects and glass
- The Quantum tower is strong — it is safer to stay inside the building
- Pull over if driving (except on bridges/tunnels); stay in car
- Avoid windows, heavy furniture, appliances, bookcases, kitchen

- Know shutoff valve locations
- If water stops: don’t flush the toilet (tape the handle to prevent flushing) and use toilet tank water with 9 drops of bleach
- Anticipate aftershocks; monitor radio/TV
